2017 PERENNIAL PLANT OF THE YEAR
Asclepias tuberosa, commonly known as butterfly weed, thrives in full sun, prefers acid soil, and will flower June thru August.  Dense clumps of leafy stems are topped with broad flat clusters of fiery orange flowers.  This plant is of the Milkweed Family which is named for the milky sap produced when the plants are pricked or damaged.  Milkweed leaves are the sole food source for the caterpillars of the monarch butterfly.  Butterflies are attracted to the fiery orange flowers of the butterfly weed.  The flowers are an important source of nectar for a wide variety of adult butterflies.
